A Private Lake House On The Niagara Escarpment By Ventin Group Ltd.

Natural geography knows no borders. The Niagara Escarpment, a geological formation of bedrock which predominantly runs east to west from Western New York into Southern Ontario, is most recognized as the cliff over which the Niagara River plunges at Niagara Falls. Its distinctive landscaping features make it one of the thirteen UNESCO World Biospheres in Canada.

This dynamic environment is the location of a private lake house designed by Ventin Group Ltd.

Situated on a perch that affords exceptional vistas, the sheer mass of the imposing structure was carefully edited into a series of balanced geometric compositions. By incorporating an abundance of natural materials – wood, stone, glass and metal – in an artful nuance, the dwelling complements the setting rather than competes, expressing the designer’s will to embrace nature rather than fight it. This cohesive language of earthy warm materials contrasted with minimalist geometric forms seamlessly carries into the interior.

The heavy visual texturing of the materials – ranging from the stone walls and ground cover to the smooth stone and glass fenestration – add depth to the space. The warm wood is contrasted with the icy cool whites and greys of the stone and masonry. This use of materials takes the visual language traditionally found in cottages and cabins and infuses it in a contemporary design, creating a domestic setting which is both familiar and fresh.

Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the residence allow the beauty of the natural surroundings to meld with the natural interior finishes. The windows are framed with rich chocolate coloured frames to create distinct linear divisions. These large openings also allow an abundance of natural light to penetrate the space resulting in comfortable lighting and a continuous visual flow between the interior and exterior.

The home furnishings in this residence are also visually arresting.

The birch tree posts, antler lighting fixture and rush grass dining chairs keep nature present, while the Muskoka chairs and Hudson Bay blanket give a distinct nod to its Canadian setting.

We applaud the execution of this compelling residence.
