Canada’s Atlas of Excellence in Architecture Is Here!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have all of Canada’s greatest feats of architecture and design archived in one place for your perusal?

Well, wonder no more!

The Atlas Of Excellence In Canadian Architecture has officially launched! It is a database of regional and national award winners in the fields of architecture, design and urban planning – dating back to 1992! Eligible candidates for these 70+ annual awards include architects residing in Canada and graduates of Canadian architecture schools living either in Canada or abroad.

The best part? It is unmatched; there is no existing database like this one in the entire world!

The database is supported by the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada through the Canada Research Chairs Program. The project is helmed by initiated by Jean-Pierre Chupin of the Université de Montréal – the current Canada Research Chair in Architecture, Competitions and Mediations of Excellence.

The current database represents 2 years of hard work by archivists; in another year, they hope to expand the breadth of the atlas to include awards dating back to 1950!

Below is one of the Award OF Excellence Winners for 2019 – a prime example of the type of project you can expect to discover in the database.

Long term, the goal of the database is to not only celebrate Canadian ingenuity but also to better ourselves: “The AEA collective platform will be meant to provide scientific data in order to support education, policies, actions, and mediations aiming at excellence in the built environment.” – AEA.  In this way, researchers and students of architecture will be able to use the data, information, analyses, comparisons, and visualizations of the award winner to identify better practices and contribute to the evolution of the field.

If you love architecture, be sure to keep tabs on this fabulous resource – we certainly will! We hope that, as the database grows, so will national pride and love for home-grown Canadian talent!
