Cabin Residences development offers a contemporary urban take on the comforts of a Northern Ontario Cottage. The 25 unit building will be located at 45 Dovercourt in Toronto’s central west end, with each of the modularly constructed, 2 storey homes featuring outdoor space in either a terrace or rooftop.
RAW Design is the architecture studio behind the clever solution of stacking 14 foot wide prefabricated units to make use of the narrow lot, but Mason Studio’s interiors for the model suite warrant a little gushing…okay make that a lot of gushing!
The designers make use of locally sourced materials using furnishings and accessories by Canadian craftspeople. Blonde and blackened wood contrast in the kitchen, framing a stone slab backsplash like a piece of art. Extending the wood of the cabinets over the ceiling lends warmth to the space with a contemporary and minimal nod to the cottage. Leather pulls add interest to the cabinetry, echoing this nod.
This detail is repeated on the cabinetry in the master bath where veneer adds interest to a feature wall. Mosaic tiling on the floors adds an element of tactility to the space and stone takes centre stage again with bookmatched white marble behind the tub.
The emphasis on material pairings and natural finishes throughout lets the cabin-in-the-city concept come through in a way that’s subtle rather than kitschy, executed in a way that feels polished and refined.
