When the size of your property is measured in feet and not acres, you have to optimize the space as best you can. Especially if you have a swimming pool.
This redesign of a 50 x 77 foot yard with an existing ‘kidney shaped’ pool by PLANT Architect Inc demonstrates how intelligent design can create a successful use of space.
Located in the Casa Loma neighbourhood of Toronto, this garden remains open with a lush ring of plantings.

A new terrace of dyed concrete and stone paving connects the residence to the pool.

The new fencing provides containment and privacy without dominating the environment. In portions, the upper bands ‘fade away’ which help blur the edge of the property and co-opt the neighbours’ property as its own vista.
The waves of weathered steel edges around the perimeter of the pool provide a transitional ‘bridge’ between the water and the planting, providing a distinctive transition to these zones while mimicking the focal point of the pool.

For all its beauty, it serves as a very practical space. A new deck with barbecue and custom seating create many functions for this ‘outdoor room’.

I especially adore the integrated outdoor lighting. Concealed in the benches, the weathered steel edging and amidst the plantings, this ethereal lighting softly illuminates the garden creating a magical environment.
It transforms what would otherwise be a dark void by night into a tranquil personal evening refuge. Stunning!
