Bedford Road Garden, Toronto

Making the best use of outdoor space is essential in any city, where finding refuge from the hustle and bustle of urban life is critical to well-being.

PLANT Architect Inc took on the challenge of achieving an outdoor sanctuary with this small space in Toronto’s Annex neigbourhood, with incredible results.

The use of foliage and fencing created a private oasis away from neighbours and the wider world, while providing an inviting sun-dappled escape for the homeowners.

The use of dark wood decking and fencing gives the yard a natural feel.

Practicality and purpose also played a role in the design.

With lounge seating, a BBQ, and a storage shed, this outdoor ‘room’ has everything necessary to entertain friends and family.

Originally, a large deck dominated the rear yard. By reducing this built structure it created the opportunity for more outdoor space. With the deck’s smaller footprint, the steps down to the stone terrace provide a grounding transition from the dwelling to the yard, and enhance the connection to terra firma and the lush plantings. Now the garden feels likes its own environment, yet it seamlessly connects to the dwelling.

The well-executed and thoughtful design of this outdoor space demonstrates that even small spaces can serve multiple functions effortlessly. We LOVE!
