Andrew Jones Design, Toronto

It’s always a good feeling when you come across a designer whose work sparks your interest and catches your eye, but when he’s also from your own city the find seems to feel that much more satisfying.

At least, that’s how I felt when I discovered Andrew Jones Designs.

Andrew Jones in Toronto produces some thoughtful well-executed furniture, lighting, interiors and more for his clients.

Jones’ furniture has a sophisticated, clean aesthetic which he describes as an integration of “form, material, structure, and use”.

The Woodrow chair designed in collaboration with Nathalie de Leval and Chris Howker is a wooden dining chair originally designed for the Royal Court Theatre in London, England. The piece caught my eye almost immediately when scrolling through the various projects. The design of the chair allows for stacking (despite the wide, low aesthetic which would suggest otherwise).

It came as no surprise to read that the design has since been licensed to Keilhauer in Toronto and expanded into a larger line of seating of the same name.

Jones’ copper Horizontal Vase, reminiscent of a bouquet wrapped in paper, sits on a solid block of sycamore with a slight depression on the top. The block has a thin piece of rubber to securely hold the copper cone in various positions.

The Dowel Screens created for an attic redesign in Atlanta, Georgia create divisions in the small living space, while still allowing limited visual connection to the adjoining spaces. The space is framed by two wooden screens hanging symmetrically. Each screen holds 441 specially placed cherry wood dowels, connected via a system of aircraft cables.
