East Coast Charmer

If you ask us, one of our favourite regional vernacular styles is the east coast Shingle House.

The one in the photo above, where I had the pleasure of staying this past week is called – perhaps without surprise – ‘The Black House’.

Located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, this vintage manse dating from the 1880s underwent a significant transformation over a four year period, evolving from a forlorn dilapidated tenement into a luxury furnished vacation and corporate rental.

Its respectful restoration/renovation has been documented on a blog called ‘The Tales Of Upper Hillsborough‘, which candidly shares the trials and tribulations – along with the very real costs (around CAN$750,000) associated with an undertaking this substantial. After a long journey, the final touches are being completed just as its first guests arrive.

You can see the most recent post of its Attic Atelier – with some charming interior pics – by clicking ‘PEI’s Most Romantic Vacation Accommodations‘.
