#5 Boyleville Saloon: A Dog Sledder’s Cabin In The Yukon Wilderness

Researched and Written by Liam Harrap, a master’s student in Journalism at Carleton University

ome homes are built for people to pause, spread roots, and raise a family. Others are meant for transient folks, such as chefs, fruit pickers, and in this case, dog sledders.

Boyleville Saloon is located 30 km north of Whitehorse in the Yukon. It doesn’t have central heating, running water, and there’s a blanket stapled over the front door to keep out drafts. The space is small with the kitchen and bedroom in the same room. The bathroom is outside, which may cause concerns on a frosty -40C night. It isn’t unusual for the water in the kettle to freeze overnight or the counter to be coated in a fine layer of frost.

The house was built for dogsledders and Kristina Disney wouldn’t live anywhere else.

For four years now, I’ve invited Canadian Students from coast to coast who are enrolled academically in the fields of Architecture, Landscape, Interior Design, Industrial Design, or Canadian History of Art & Architecture (and other disciplines which include a focus on Housing and Home) to join the Houseporn Paid Internship and Mentorship Program. As part of this program, students are given the opportunity to research and write stories about our country’s shelter industry, while I provide support, constructive criticism, and guidance throughout the process. I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to watch students hone their craft while building a portfolio of written work which reflects both their passion of Canadian housing and their ability to be wordsmiths!

I continue to be inspired daily by the voracious young minds that share my love of houseporn, many who will undoubtedly contribute to a new generation of Canada’s vernacular!
