A $21M Secluded Seaside Sanctuary Off The Coast Of Nova Scotia

Do you wonder if those pesky trips to the grocery store or pharmacy are negating all of your isolation efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19? For those who are serious about cutting their exposure to zero – and who have upwards of $21M in their bank account – the currently-for-sale Strum Island, NS, could be just what you never knew you wanted!

Like most unique and unusual properties with huge price tags, it’s taken a while for this property to find its next owner; The Lodge on Strum Island has been listed with Marina Cowan of Coldwell Banker for about 4 years now. However, I applaud Marina’s recent marketing efforts to position this property as safely-sequestered and fully-outfitted island retreat, in response to the current COVID-19 crisis. Media outlets have referred to The Lodge as an oversized ‘pandemic panic room’ given its remote location and self-sufficiency. Basically, it could be your go-to destination in any type of situation where isolation is paramount.

Life on 9.88 acre Strum Island (126 Strum Island Way) in Mahone Bay is not exactly roughing it, however. The ‘pandemic panic room’ or ‘safe room’ analogy is true in the sense of privacy, but actually, this is quite the luxury property! Far-flung from an underground bunker or metal-clad room, on Strum Island you will live im style! The current tagline feature at StrumIsland.com is: “Far enough from the world’s wearisome woes….And close enough to enjoy all the comforts of a five-star resort.”

The town of Mahone Bay was settled in 1754, and has been described as the ‘new Nantucket’ – a sleepy town with great charm and wonderful hospitality. There’s plenty of sightseeing, fishing, outdoor recreational opportunities, and a delightful main street with all the essentials as well as charming ‘Mom & Pop’ shops. That said, Mahone Bay doesn’t have the draw of a summer destination, so you won’t have to worry about being invaded by tourists every June, July and August. It is, however where you launch your boat or take of in your helicopter to reach Strum Island!

Check out the masonry work, shingles, arches, vines and trellises; you could almost imagine it sitting on a French vineyard, couldn’t you? Let’s take a peek inside the aptly named ‘Lodge’, which features 6 bedrooms and 7 baths spread across 9500 square feet!

Check out the detailing on that fireplace screen! And the wood paneling below!

With all the perks – like a sauna!

But here’s my favourite feature: the turret bedroom! What a view to wake up to!

The 10,000+ square foot property boasts landscaped yards, walking trails, greenhouses and thousands of species of indigenous trees, plants and animals to observe and enjoy.  It also has a drilled well and septic system and everything runs on propane in case you lose power! I like that it embraces a sense of the vernacular with its rustic decor, yet is still outfitted with modern conveniences like wifi, a heated dog house, and a separate building for the lobster kitchen!

And only three minutes by boat to any further amenities you require!

If you have the means, you really couldn’t ask to own a more beautiful slice of Canada’s east coast!

On a personal note, all this talk of panic rooms has me remembering one of my favourite movies! Here’s the trailer for PANIC ROOM, starring a fierce Jodi Foster, and Kristen Stewart in one of her break-out roles. If you haven’t seen this movie, and you like a thrilling ride, I highly recommend it!
